Are you worried that the next four months won’t be filled with as many rumors, speculation, and exhaustive trailer examination as we all experienced during Spider-Man: No Way Home? Well then, you’re clearly one of the four people in the world who hasn’t yet seen the new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer. The preview includes a treasure trove of delicious hints about what Marvel fans could have waiting for them in the upcoming movie. In spite of his face — or, at least, not a clear shot of it — failing to appear in the trailer, a lot of fans think it reveals Tom Cruise as the Superior Iron Man. The appearance takes place at around the 01:34 mark, when we see a character covered in glowing energy fighting Wanda. You can watch the trailer below, and we’ve set it just before the reveal in question.
Is that character Tom Cruise as the Superior Iron Man? It’s certainly possible, but you could say the same thing about so many other Marvel characters. However, at least one guy with a bit of authority has weighed in. Writer Tom Taylor — who co-created the “Superior” version of Iron Man — hinted that he thinks it could very well the the less heroic version of Tony Stark. And plenty of other fans agree with him.
Not everyone is convinced the glowing character is Tom Cruise, however. At least one fan believes that the character is a variant of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel — possibly a Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) variant. They point out what appears to be blue blood on Wanda toward the end of the trailer, and the fact that Carol Danvers — as a human/Kree hybrid — has blue blood.
So is it Tom Cruise or not? Well, there’s no way to know for 100% certainty until someone from the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness production weighs in on the subject. However, we’re leaning towards the Captain Marvel variant theory proposed above. First, it makes sense the blue blood on Wanda would come from a Kree character. Second, if it is a Monica Rambeau variant, it makes more sense that Wanda would be forced to fight her, since they met in WandaVision.
But even if the glowing character isn’t Tom Cruise as Superior Iron Man, that doesn’t mean he isn’t in the film. There are plenty of other reasons to think he will appear as the character. There have been rumors about Cruise appearing as a Tony Stark variant in the film for a while, based on the past piece of trivia that he turned down the role before it was offered to Robert Downey, Jr. There was also a possible leak of Cruise looking very Tony-Stark-ish in what appears to be a motion capture suit — supposedly from the set of Doctor Strange 2 — in January.
Then there’s what could very well be The Illuminati. In Marvel Comics, the group was introduced as a clandestine organization with members of great intellect and/or influence from the narrative’s superhero community. Tony Stark is an integral member, and in the trailer we see a captive Strange escorted by what appears to be robots designed by Stark. If some version of Stark is in the film — since Robert Downey, Jr. almost certainly won’t be in it — it has to be someone, doesn’t it? Why not Tom Cruise?
